Remember, vivid colours are commitment colours - this means that maintenance (both at home and in-salon) is essential to keep your vivids looking fab. If you don't want upkeep, or don't want to bother with a bunch of stuff you have to do at home to care for your hair, vivids may not be for you.
Remember that no-matter what was used to achieve your vivid colour, these colours WILL fade... that's just the nature of vivids.
When picking your colours, make sure you consider how the colour will fade out. Do you like both colours? If not, you may want to change your choice of colour.
For example: if you hate green, you may not want to pick a blue or turquoise colour... because they will fade out green.
If you aren’t sure what colour your hair will fade out to, you can ask your colourist.
To achieve vivid colour, we first have to bleach your hair. Some colours require us to get you super light... which may not always be possible without risking serious compromise to your hair.
Generally speaking, yellow, blue and bright red are super fussy, and don't tend to last long. Pinks and purples are the easiest to maintain and don't always need the same kind of fussing that other vivids do - this is why you see more of those colours around than, say, neon green.
If you aren't set on a specific vivid colour, consider letting your colourist help you pick.
There is a high likelihood of colour transfer with vivid colour. This means that you will probably leave some colour behind in places where your hair rubs, and this will stain your pillowcase, your towels and... as Robyn found out when she went purple... your bathmat may also suffer staining from your hair dripping when you get out of the shower.
It's no big deal, just use pillowcases, towels and bathmats that you don’t care about - your faded out old beach towel, for example, is the perfect thing to wrap your hair in once you leave the shower.
There is a slight chance that your vivid colour may not come out.
No matter what method of application or type of vivid colour we use, sometimes the hair stains. It's not at all common when professional colour is used, but it isn't impossible.
Hard water is not your friend. Mineral buildup causes all kinds of grief for everybody, especially those with vivid colours. It’s always a good idea to invest in a shower head filter if you have hard water - you can order them on Amazon.
